Beyond The Numbers: Country Safety Pregnancy Workshop
Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic jointly with World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has run the technical workshop “Beyond the numbers” within period from 17 to 20 June, 2008 within implementation of the initiative for securing of safety pregnancy in the country.
The Manas Taalimi National programme for health sector reforms for 1996-2010 has priority vector – Mother and Child Health Security. The Law on Reproductive Rights of Citizens and Guarantees to Secure Their Rights was adopted as well as National Kyrgyz Population Reproductive Health Security Strategy; the Perinatal Programme for 2008-2017 was recently admitted.
The workshop discussed the steps to introduce some ideas developed during first national workshop in November 2006, tools to study pregnancy and delivery complications threatened the life, basics of quality care of pregnant women, audit formats, skills to run the meetings to look into complications threatened the life, minutes of assessment in pilot institutions. The workshop’s trainees have elaborated the country action plan to introduce selected approaches.
According to Deputy Head of Medical Care Organization Department Ms.A.Eshkhodjaeva, today, there is no reliable statistic on maternal mortality yet to prevent unjustified maternal deaths; in particular this indicator of maternal mortality is 62.3 per every 100,000 live-born ones. The methodology which forms a basis for the seminar, enables to obtain information required that would be applied to disclosure of reasons leading to a death or threatening life complications, and identification of preventive ways. The State Secretary of Ministry of Health Mr.Kasymbek Mambetov has pointed out that complications and critical situations in maternity hospitals take place every day, and there is necessity in capacity building for health workers who deal with pregnancy and delivery. He has also outlined an importance of this 4 days event, and urged the attendants to promote ideas and conclusions admitted at the workshop at local and rayon level so that to achieve objectives identified.
Based on introduction of the methodology “Beyond the numbers” Ministry of Health of the KR expects an improvement of completeness in registration of maternal and infant mortality through capacity building for health workers of treatment and prevention institutions in prevention of unjustified maternal deaths, and surely, improvement of quality of services delivered to pregnant women, women in childbirth, women recently confined, and infants.
