Development of standards in youth friendly health services.
Since of its independence, Kyrgyzstan goes through social and economic, and political changes. These changes have first affected state of health of Kyrgyz people, and especially vulnerable are young people and teenagers. Traditional problems of their maturity overlapped not only with society transition period, but significant changes in educational and health systems too.
Despite continuous comprehensive transformations in health sector the needs of young people in information and services related to protection of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) are not satisfied due to their susceptibility to influence of their social environment that directly or indirectly identifies their life position and behavior in the are of sexual relationship and reproduction. A link between deterioration of SRH (wide propagation of STIs, HIV, frequent cases of unwanted pregnancy), an increase of harmful substances use (alcohol, drugs, and tobacco), a lack of life experience give visual expression about the fact how problems of youth are interrelated, and the extent of need in comprehensive approach to the problem resolution.
There is a vital need in assistance to healthy development of teenagers through supply of services – relevant, not expensive, and accessible – to be integrated into sustainable and all-around response to their needs. This shall include provision of access and attention, awareness and education, use of such approaches as peer-to-peer training and development of psychological and social skills, support to young people participation in the society life, setup of safety and supportive environment including young people friendly services.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) implements the project on protection of sexual and reproductive health of young people and teenagers in Kyrgyzstan. The target of this project is the improvement of access and information on sexual and reproductive health, gender equality and prevention of HIV/AIDS for youth through implementation of training programmes based on peer-to-peer methodology, training module on healthy life style, and development and implementation of national standards of youth friendly services to youth.
