Information about the population size and growth, age and gender characteristics, territorial location is necessary to formulate, plan and monitor national policies.  In this regard, the significance of the Population and Housing Census should not be underestimated since it is the only source of data collected once in ten years for the smallest localities and vulnerable population groups - people living in disadvantage areas or circumstances. Being indispensable source of information about the number, characteristics of the population, and its living conditions, Census will provide government and other stakeholders with essential statistics or information on the population, their demographic, social and economic characteristics, and their housing, as are needed for governmental policy dialogue and monitoring of the Country Development Strategy and the MDGs at all levels (national and sub-national) during the following decade.

On 24 March - 2 April 2009 Kyrgyzstan will hold its Population and Housing Census. Within its regular resources for 2009-2010 UNFPA envisages support to census personnel training activities, including issues of data processing and analysis and publication of census results. UNFPA has supplied computers and printers for census departments in all 7 provinces. In addition, special computer equipment, scanner and server along with modern software (ArcGis) have been procured for the department of geo-informational systems for elaborating cartographic materials based on census results. One specialist of the department will undergo training on use of the equipment and software, bringing valuable knowledge and capacity into the statistical system of Kyrgyzstan.  The overall UNFPA support to Census activities in 2008-09 can be estimated to total amount of over 150,000 dollars.
