Kyrgyzstan has one of the highest maternal mortality indicators in the Central Asian region and is reported to be lagging behind in terms of meeting the target in achieving the Millennium Development Goal 5 (MDG 5).

For the last several years the indicator has positive sign of stabilization: 63.5 in 2009, 51.3 in 2010, 54.8 in 2011 and 49.1 maternal mortality rate per 100 thousand live births in 2012.
