SCMU and UNFPA: How Efficient Procurement Saves Women’s Lives in Kyrgyzstan

Thanks to SCMU’s well-established operational mechanisms, the entire process — from supplier selection to final delivery — is carried out swiftly and in a coordinated manner. This enables the UNFPA Kyrgyzstan Country Office to efficiently and promptly equip the national healthcare system with life-saving supplies critical for protecting women's lives.

Leveraging UNFPA’s extensive product catalogue, SCMU supported the Country Offices in the timely procurement and delivery of 40 Non-Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garments (NASG) to the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic. These clinically proven devices help stabilize women experiencing postpartum hemorrhage and are particularly valuable in settings with limited access to emergency obstetric care.

As a result of the SCMU-facilitated delivery, the national clinical protocols of the Kyrgyz Republic were revised to officially incorporate NASG into standardized medical care. This marked a key milestone toward systemic change and the sustainable strengthening of the maternal health sector.

On 22 July, a hands-on training session was conducted to demonstrate the use of the NASG. The session enabled healthcare professionals not only to familiarize themselves with the device, but also to practice its application — a critically important step for the successful introduction of any new technology.

The handover of the NASGs to the Ministry of Health was conducted with the participation of UNFPA Kyrgyzstan Country Director, Chinwe Ogbonna.

This experience highlights a coordinated and integrated approach implemented through partnership between Country Offices and SCMU: from centralized procurement of essential products to the “last mile,” which includes protocol adaptation, professional training, and sustainable implementation.

SCMU continues to strengthen the supply chain for maternal health in Kyrgyzstan — efficiently, strategically, and with a results-oriented focus.
