UNFPA’s State of World Population 2015

On December 4th, 2015, at 9:30 AM in the UN House, the Global Report The State of World Population 2015 was launched.

Imagine that you are nine months pregnant, and already start having contractions. But earthquake in your village has cut you off from neighbours, friends and health care. So, you will have to deliver by yourself.
Imagine that you and your kids are in a camp for displaced people. Your teenage daughter had to go to fetch water from the water pump that is 500 meter far away, outside of the camp. All of a sudden, she encounters an abuse from a group of strangers. You have nowhere to go for help.

According to a new UNFPA’s Report on the State of World Population 2015, released today:
Every day, 507 women and adolescent girls die during pregnancy and childbirth in crises like earthquakes and conflicts.
100 million people need humanitarian assistance this year. More than 25 million of them are women and adolescent girls of childbearing age.
Nearly 60 million people have been uprooted by conflict – the largest number since the end of the Second World War.
Kyrgyzstan has been classified as the ‘most seismically dangerous country in Central Asia’, as well as the country exposed to landslides, floods and mudflows. Approximately 3,000 earthquakes a year occur in Kyrgyzstan.

Moreover, the country is at risk of conflict-related emergencies and under high risk of intra- and inter-state conflicts. Volatile areas still exist, and they can trigger violent conflicts and complex emergencies. The regional political stability is further threatened by region-wide, inter-state disputes over land, water, energy and other vital resources.
‘A common approach in dealing with these issues is not working. We must do much more, helping vulnerable populations, particularly adolescent girls. We need to invest in building a more stable peace that is able to survive in times of crisis,’ said Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, UN Deputy Secretary General and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The State of World Population 2015 Report calls for better shelter to help women and adolescent girls weather the storms of disasters and conflicts all around us today.
UNFPA calls to develop a humanitarian agenda for transformations for the sake of women and adolescent girls that would shift the focus from response and reaction to mitigating risks and strengthening the ability to resist crises.
